How much weight will I lose with Ozempic?

With every new medication released for weight loss, people want that new medication. When Saxenda was released people were keen to try this new injection and has been popularly called the “skinny jab”. Saxenda belongs to he class of medications called GLP-1

Now another Glucagon Like Peptide(GLP-1) called Ozempic has been approved for weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes. The same medication Ozempic , that is Semaglutide is now licensed by FDA for chronic weight management and the trade name is Wegovy.

How much weight did people lose weight with Ozempic?

Since the release of the research studies, thousands of people are enquiring about the new medication. Research studies have been published in the

and

in the New England Journal of Medicine:

Based on the STEP-1 study, people on Semaglutide lost 15.3 kg compared to the placebo group who only lost 2.6 kg. This was at the end of 68 weeks. The dose used was Semaglutide 2.4mg weekly.

The STEP-2 study showed that people on Semaglutide lost about 10% of their body weight. The STEP-2 study was done in people with type 2diabetes and the dose used was Semaglutide 2.4mg weekly.

People need to understand the outcome was due to the fact that people were supported by the research team with life style changes and they were motivated and they engaged regularly. Just taking this injection and not adapting new life style changes will not result in similar weight loss.

Real world data on Semaglutide

The above weight loss was in the research studies. Weight loss in people after the medication is released, that is post marketing is also analysed and is Called the real world data. This provides a true picture of the effectiveness of the medication in real life as research data are highly biased.

The weight loss in people in the real world, especially those with type 2 diabetes was significant.
