Bariatric surgery can be life-changing, but long-term success requires a commitment beyond the operating room. Post-bariatric surgery failure is when there is inadequate weight loss or significant weight regain. Approximately 20-30% of patients who undergo bariatric surgery are faced with post-bariatric surgery within 2-5 years after surgery.
When do you say that it is a failure? When there is <50% of weight loss after 18 months, and gaining back >25% of the lost weight. This is because of physiological adaptations, dietary choices, lack of physical activity and psychological factors.
Here are some steps that you can follow to avoid post-bariatric surgery
- You can follow the phase of eating immediately after the post-operative stage
In phase 1, you can have clear liquids for 1-2 weeks.
In phase 2, you can start with pureed food,
In phase 3, you can start soft food,s and in the last phase, introduce the gradual introduction of solid foods.
- For long-term dietary intake, you can consume 60-80 g of protein daily, and reduce your sugar intake and processed snacks to prevent dumping syndrome. Make sure you drink enough water to stay hydrated and avoid drinking with meals to avoid early satiety.
- There can be a loss of vitamins and minerals. Talk to your doctor and get B12, iron, calcium and vitamin D to prevent deficiencies.
- Exercise helps to maintain muscle mass and prevent metabolic slowdown. Start slowly with walking and low-impact activities. At least 2-3 times per week to preserve muscle and increase metabolism. Activities like yoga, swimming, and biking improve cardiovascular health and weight stability.
Post-op mental health care is important. You can join a support group or work with a therapist specialising in weight management. Emotional eating and stress can lead to poor choices. Keep a food journal to track behaviours. Focus on the non-scale achievements like improved energy, strength, and overall well-being.
Regular medical check-ups help monitor progress and detect complications early.
Bariatric surgery is a tool, not a cure. Your success depends on consistent lifestyle changes, mindful nutrition, physical activity and mental well-being.
