Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic like medication mimic a hormone naturally produced in our intestines. Originally developed for type 2 diabetes, they work by regulating blood sugar, slowing gastric emptying and promoting satiety. What makes these drugs interesting is their influence on multiple biological pathways beyond just blood sugar control. 

GLP-1 receptors are also found in many tissues beyond the pancreas. Animal studies show that activating these receptors can reduce inflammatory signalling, oxidative stress, and bone resorption, all processes that matter in periodontitis, the chronic infection and inflammation that damages the tissue around teeth. This gives a plausible mechanism for direct anti-inflammatory and bone-protective effects in the mouth. 

Clinical evidence is still emerging. There are small clinical signals that Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Ozempic-like medication therapies reduce inflammation markers in people with diabetes, and periodontal health is tightly linked to systemic inflammation and glycaemic control. Because periodontal and diabetes influence each other, better glucose control can itself improve gum outcomes, so any periodontal benefit from Mounjaro, Wegovy, or Ozempic-like medication might come from two routes: improved metabolism and a direct anti-inflammatory effect.

While Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic like medication may reduce inflammation in some, dry mouth, acid reflux, or nausea and vomiting in some people can damage dental health. Reduced saliva and increased reflux can raise the risk of cavities, enamel erosion, and gum irritation, potentially counteracting any anti-inflammatory benefits. 

To summarise, preclinical and early clinical studies are promising that Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Ozempic-like medications can reduce inflammation and protect bone in models of periodontitis, and systemic anti-inflammatory effects have been observed in people. But we don’t have enough human trials to prove that GLP-1 directly treats gum disease. 

It is important for people on Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic-like medication to maintain good oral hygiene, stay hydrated, report dry-mouth or reflux symptoms to their care team, and keep regular dental visits.
