What is a master metabolic
health checkup?

What is a master metabolic health checkup?

A master metabolic health check-up is a comprehensive medical examination specifically designed to evaluate the health status of individuals with diabetes or to help people with their weight management. This check-up typically includes a range of tests and evaluations to assess various aspects of a person’s health, such as blood sugar levels, cholesterol, kidney function, eye health, and cardiovascular risk.

Why do I need this master checkup?

About 80-90% of people with Type 2 diabetes are either overweight or obese. Weight loss improves blood glucose control. However research shows that people with Type 2 diabetes struggle more than the general population to lose weight. Weight gain is not the only risk linked to diabetes as there are several serious health risks which a person could inherit if they are not managing their diabetes correctly.

The purpose of a master metabolic health check-up is to identify any health issues and to take appropriate measures to manage or prevent them. It is recommended for individuals to undergo such check-ups at regular intervals, as advised by their healthcare provider.

Body Composition Analysis is arranged by healthcare professionals to evaluate a person’s body weight by breaking it down into its core components like: fat, protein, body water, and minerals. Some analysers also provide regional body composition including an estimate of visceral fat. Body composition provides a more accurate assessment of your health than traditional methods like Body Mass Index (BMI) and body weight.

electrocardiogram (ecg)

An ECG works by detecting and recording the electrical activity of the heart. The heart’s electrical activity is generated by specialised cells called pacemaker cells, which create an electrical signal that spreads through the heart and causes it to contract.

During an ECG, small electrodes are placed on the skin of the chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are connected to a machine called an electrocardiograph, which detects and amplifies the heart’s electrical activity. The machine then records the electrical signals generated by the heart as a series of waveforms on a graph.

The biothesiometer test, also known as the biothesiometry or vibration perception threshold (VPT) test, is a medical assessment used to evaluate a person’s sensation of vibration in their extremities, particularly in the feet. This test is commonly performed to detect peripheral neuropathy, a condition that affects the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord and can lead to reduced or lost sensation in the limbs.

Doppler test

A diabetes Doppler test, also known as an ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) test, is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the blood flow in the legs and feet of individuals with diabetes. The test involves the use of a Doppler ultrasound machine, which measures the blood pressure in the arteries of the arms and legs.

During the test, a healthcare provider will place a blood pressure cuff on the arm and another cuff on the ankle of each leg. The Doppler ultrasound machine will be used to detect the blood flow in the arteries at each location. By comparing the blood pressure readings from the arm and the ankle, the healthcare provider can determine the ankle-brachial index, which is a measure of the blood flow in the legs.

Retinal screening, also known as retinal examination or ophthalmoscopy, is a medical procedure used to examine the retina at the back of the eye. The retina is a light-sensitive layer of tissue that plays a crucial role in vision. By evaluating the retina, eye care professionals can detect various eye conditions and systemic diseases that may affect the eyes. Early detection and treatment of these conditions can help prevent vision loss and complications.

A specialist will come into the clinic to perform the retinal test during the master health check up.

24 hour
Ambulatory Blood pressure
monitoring

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is a specialised medical test used to measure blood pressure at regular intervals over a 24-hour period. Unlike the conventional method of blood pressure measurement taken in a doctor’s office, ABPM provides a more comprehensive and accurate assessment of an individual’s blood pressure fluctuations throughout the day and night.

ABPM provides valuable information for tailoring treatment plans and adjusting medications to manage blood pressure more effectively. It is a safe and non-invasive procedure that can significantly contribute to the accurate diagnosis and management of hypertension and related conditions.
