The current approach to weight loss needs to change

With the increasing prevalence of obesity worldwide and more so in the UK, we need to rethink if the current interventions for weight loss are appropriate.

Why is it that despite thousands of diets, meal replacements and weight loss surgeries the number of people who are obese or overweight is increasing. In the UK about 60% of the population are either overweight or obese. Until now people sought a weight loss intervention or a product to lose weight in order to wear a particular dress size or a bikini for the next summer holiday. The current COVID-19 pandemic has sent a message which is loud and clear: Get to a healthy weight and sustain the weight you have lost.

People who were obese had more complications and more people were admitted into ICU if they had coronavirus infection.

Fad  diets and crash diets are counterproductive and unsustainable.

Dr Rajeswaran, one of our lead bariatric physicians explains in this article about how we all including the government should rethink how we manage obesity.

Most of us have been through some diets or exercise programmes. We all know what is healthy and what foods to avoid, however we do not know why we are getting it wrong. We are all happy following a diet, but soon we get bored or stop losing weight. Also a number of people who have lost weight, regain all the weight and gain more weight after they have stopped dieting.
