Can I skip meals since I am not hungry anymore? Today, I will be talking about the meal timing and nutrition while on Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro, like medications.
Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro, like medications, work by mimicking a hormone naturally produced in your intestines. These medications slow gastric emptying, meaning food stays in your stomach longer, creating prolonged feelings of fullness. They also affect brain centres that control appetite and food intake. While this mechanism is incredibly effective for weight management, it creates unique nutritional challenges that require careful consideration.
Recent research highlights the concerns about skipping meals while on Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro, like medications.
Malnutrition: When you are eating significantly less food, you are also getting fewer essential nutrients. Inadequate protein intake can lead to muscle loss alongside fat loss.
Irregular eating patterns can affect blood sugar stability, especially for those using these medications to manage diabetes. The risk of hypoglycaemia is low because GLP-1 drugs boost insulin only when blood sugar is elevated. Hypoglycaemia becomes a risk if you are also taking insulin or other glucose-lowering medicines, and during prolonged fasting or if you skip meals unexpectedly.
The other common problem is gastrointestinal symptoms, because GLP-1 slows down the gastric emptying and reduces motility, which commonly causes nausea, bloating, early fullness, and sometimes vomiting. These symptoms can be worse if you fast for long periods and then eat large meals.
A study recommends dietary adjustments to reduce these symptoms, like having smaller and more frequent meals, avoiding high-fat meals, and slow reintroduction of food after fasting.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition provides recommendations:
- Aim for at least 30 grams of high-quality protein three times daily. This helps preserve muscle mass during weight loss.
- Rather than skipping meals, focus on smaller and nutrient-dense portions.
- Spread your nutrition throughout the day. Even if portions are smaller, regular meal timing helps maintain metabolic stability and ensures adequate nutrient absorption.
- When you do eat, prioritise nutrient-dense foods like lean protein, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Every bite counts more when your overall intake is reduced.
Here is what you can do to follow this:
- Eat three small, balanced meals.
- Set meal reminders if natural hunger cues are diminished.
- Focus on protein at every meal to prevent muscle loss.
- Choose nutrient-dense foods to maximise nutritional value.
- Stay hydrated, as GLP-1 can affect fluid balance.
Summary
You can skip a meal, but it is not risk-free as the safety depends on which other medications you take, your medical history and how your body tolerates reduced food intake. Rather than skipping meals due to low hunger cues, focus on good-quality nutrition in smaller quantities.
